Drummer/composer Weinstein, from Illinois by way of Spain, and his
international quartet make modern music. Sometimes it swings, sometimes
it floats; sometimes it's richly harmonic, sometimes it inhabits
post-Ornette terrain with no fixed chords. The concept encompasses a
full range of jazz tradition (witness "Laura" "I'll Be Seeing You,"
"Weaver of Dreams") but it generates a group sound that could only be
1990's. Influenced by Paul Motian, Dewey Redman, Stan Getz, the great
lyricists of modern jazz, rising tenor star Chris Cheek is the perfect
lead voice for Weinstein's music.
"Four Stars...a strong, consistent first outing..."
-Jon Andrews, Down Beat
"Superb...taken one tune at a time, the album is
acutely lyrical and uniformly pleasing. Taken as a whole, it's a real
feat....a tone of longing tempered by cool wisdom infuses the entire
disc."
-Daniel Gewertz, Boston Phoenix
